Vortexbox

Post by happygirlnyc »

Hello All,

First off I'd like to say this site is fantastic! I've been contemplating building some kind of media server for years, but I really didn't know where to start. The step by step instructions on this site has given me the confidence to finally take on this project. Before I found this site though I found the vortexbox site. Is anyone else familiar with that application? I know it's also a Linux based solution but I'm more interested in the pro and cons of using vortexbox vs some of the other applications listed on this site. Outside of mythtv, vortexbox seems to cover a lot of the other functionality i.e. twonkymedia, squeezebox, makemv etc. Do I understand it's functionality or am I missing something? My requirements for a media server is that it is headless, rips and store various forms of media (CD, DVD, BD) and streams to my squeezboxes, PS3 and/or Xbox360.

Thanks for your help!!

Hi,

Apologies for the delay in replying. I saw your post and intended having a read up on Vortexbox before I replied. I got sidetracked and forgot all about you. Sorry

I've never used it before I'm afraid (and judging by the lack of response I'm guessing no one else here has either).

From what I've read it looks good. Not sure how it fairs when you try and go off piste and try and install other apps tho?

I see there is a forum off the main vortexbox site. Perhaps it might be worth asking the guys there how it compares?

Sorry I couldn't make your wait worthwhile :-(

Hi Ian,

No worries. Thanks for taking the time to reply. :-) Since I have yet to rip the majority of my music, I will give vortexbox a try. This is my first foray into linux so I'm not sure how things will go but I would be happy to report on my experiences with the software when I have everything up and running. That may be a while though because I'm am still in the midst of putting my system together and there always seems to be other things that take priority over the server...

Cheers,
Denise
