yesterday i noticed putty and VncViewer were both running a little laggy. I ran sudo apt-get update and sudo aptitude safe-upgrade and then this afternoon restarted my server cause it was still running ridiculously slow. before restarting my server i attempted to physically look at it via monitor and couldn't get the server to 'wake' via keyboard or mouse which is why i ended up rebooting...upon rebooting i was given a super long scrolling screen of commands and checks (similar to the obnoxious blue screen you get with windows when it runs check disc) which ended with
ALERT! /dev/mapper/CandJService-root does not exist. Dropping to a shell!

My goodness, I've not seen that before. I've tried googling for a solution for you but not much seems to be forthcoming. This was the only one that seemed hopeful. http://superuser.com/questions/256856/u ... to-a-shell

i found that too and being at the prompt it was giving me i was able to do neither of those things and instead installed LTS (if you remember i was running the latest and not so greatest)on a 4 GB partition...now i just hope my original 300GB Partition is still there and still has my 150GB of files on it or i may have to start over on some things
