Virtual PC's

Post by Andy Horn »

Hi all.

I have now installed some VM's on my server:

Windows XP
Open Media Vault
and
Ubuntu 11.10 Desktop.

I installed VirtualBox from Oracle https://www.virtualbox.org/

Works like a charm, no faffing about with network interfaces or any other configurations, simple click and install.

So I think in the near future I am going to upgrade my server RAM to 8GB so it can handle the VM's comfortably.

Interesting Andy. How are you finding response times with the gui? Have you tried, for example, watching youtube vids on the VMs?

I've been doing a lot of playing around with VMs and thin clients but have had to put the project on hold (and the write ups!) because it's burning too much of my time.

Sorry Andy, one more question (for now!), how are you accessing these VMs? ie. what software are you using on the client side?

All I am doing is accessing my VM's via VNC through my laptop.

As yet I have not tried YouTube.

Response times seem pretty good, almost instant in fact with XP, Ubuntu 11.10 is a little slower, 11.10 seems more resource hungry than XP which is hardly surprising as there is 10 years between them :!: :!: .

As a matter of interest I have never found Ubuntu desktop to be particularly fast, not sure about all this Unity stuff-trying too hard to be a cross between W7 and Mac OSX and failing miserably or I may be just missing the point :?:

I have got a copy of W8 that I may try as a VM.

YouTube doe's not work so well, playback stutters.

This is probably because the Ubuntu server 10.04 hasn't any graphics drivers in it's kernel and also I am running virtual machines on a virtual desktop may not help.

I tried to install graphics drivers but it turned out to be an epic failure

Next on the VM list Ubuntu server 11.10, just to see what it is like.

Hi delphys.

My host OS is Ubuntu server 10.04 LTS and to run the VM's I am using VirtualBox form Oracle.
