lost network connection???

Post by pblack00 »

So after a few false starts, HD issues, various other things I'm back on the road to getting this server up and running. Yesterday I installed 10.04 LTS and all went smoothly, created some users, set up some samba shares, left it running for a night just to make sure it was stable. Accessed it via Terminal on my Mac, no problems, used Webadmin, all went well.

Then this morning, I shutdown (using the command line) and plugged in another drive. I should say I currently have the OS installed on a 160GB IDE drive, 20 reserved for OS, and the rest as a LV. I have 2 other SATA drives - 1 TB & 80 GB - I plan on using them for various movies, backup, pictures, etc... no raid. I decided to go slow and just do one drive at a time (like I said had some issues before) and plugged in the 80GB drive, rebooted, and saw the login, so assumed all was well. Figured I'd get back to working on it later (after daughter went down for morning nap!). So she does, and I attempt to login via Webadmin and SSH...no luck? I know that I saw the login, so I head to the server, login, all seems fine. Decide to run updates - and find the problem. It has no internet connection? Don't know why, I'm a linux noob, any suggestions on how to start fixing this? It just seems to have disappeared from one boot to the next. Oh, I did shutdown again, unplug the drive I plugged in this morning (because I figured that was the only change) and that didn't seem to help (didn't think it would, but thought it was worth a try.

Thanks in advance!

Hi there,

Have you logged into your router to see whether the server shows up on the list of connected devices?

Check whether your server has a valid network ip address by typing the following command directly on your server:

Code: Select all

ifconfig

If you're not sure what the output is telling you then paste the output in your next post and I'll take a look for you.

Whilst you're at it issue the following commands and send me the output for these too please:

Code: Select all

sudo cat /etc/network/interfaces

Code: Select all

sudo cat /etc/hosts

Code: Select all

sudo cat /etc/hostname

Hopefully it's an easy fix rather than faulty hardware. Fingers crossed. ;)

Thanks.

Ian.

Ended up doing some searching around online, for some reason the /etc/network/interfaces file had the incorrect device listed, fixed the number, rebooted, and no problems since. Thanks for these ideas, exactly what I found online!

No problems. Glad you got it sorted. Bit of a mystery why it went wrong in the first place tho :?
