Slight Problem with Networking

Ok here go's,

I followed your tut on how to share folders and drives across your network but instead of calling my folder 'Test Folder' I just called it Data.

I followed the tut perfectly and sure enough there was a folder on my network under my servers name called 'Data' now whenever I try to access the folder
it asks for a username and password, so I use the username and password I created in the tut and it instantly rejects access so I tried every username under the sun and still no access :/ This also happens when I try to map a network drive to the same folder.

Can anyone help please?

Ok now I feel like an idiot because Im sure I had already tried the steps in that post and it didnt work

The only thing I can think of is that I didnt restart the samba servers.....................

Well, occasionally I think the "restart samba servers" button in Webmin doesn't actually do anything. A restart of the whole server usually does the trick tho.

Hmm good point, I did restart the server there when I was following the steps in that post.

Immediately After I had logged out the forums I was fronted with the problem where i didnt have permissions to make changes within the folder, Create a folder. copy files from my laptop to the networked folder etc.

I was wondering if anyone else has experienced this?

Hi there,

You're not the first person to hit either of these problems so clearly my guide is not up to par.

I suspect this new issue is down to you not giving write permissions in Ubuntu for the relevant folder(s). So, assuming you have given write permission in Samba (when you set the samba share up in webmin) then you need to go into putty and tell Ubuntu you want people to be able to write to that folder. The easiest way to do this is to give "everyone" permission:

sudo chmod -R o+w /media/Yourfolder

Then try and write to it again.

Hi there,

Just spotted your sig and you're using 3.5TB drives How long have they been out? I'm clearly out of touch cos I thought the biggest these days was 3TB

I got them through work, we are currently using 6TB Western Digital HDD in our NVR's now but they are far too expensive to get at the moment for myself.

The 3.5TB drives are on enterprise edition but due to the WD factory flooding in the east they have become highly expensive and rare due to the fact that they are not being built anymore. Including the 6TB, 5.5TB, 4TB and 3TB drives that we use.

If you think thats impressive, We currently have a 60TB server (6 x 10TB Drives) on test in our workshop at the moment. We were approached by a manufacturer from Japan who my boss is quite friendly with, and an agreement was arranged that if the drives worked and had a full 10TB on them, we would start to roll them out on our manufacturing line immediately.

Its only on its first week of testing, out of 6, and its still going strong. Mind you, you Don't get a full 10TB its more 8.8TB of space which we weren't happy about. We weren't happy about the price either. £955 a pop then you have Tax and Shipping on top of that, plus OUR markup of 10% which brings it to £1150 - This is not a joke aswell, we have several customers in the wing waiting to get ridiculous sized servers.

But yeah 3.5TB's have been out for years
