I would like to know how to set up a media server i want to be able to watch tv in any room in the house watch dvd`s /music. What type of cable to use and all the equipment required and the best place to get the equipment I am a total novice so please treat me at the idot level please.

This question probably isn't going to get a good answer because it's way too broad and most of it can be solved by Googling. For example, you asked where to buy your parts. A Google search for "where to buy computer parts" lists Newegg, Amazon, Tiger Direct, and Best Buy on the first page. All of those would be reasonable places to buy computer parts. This website (havetheknowhow.com) has a very detailed guide to building a server, so you should probably start there, then use Google to fill in the gaps.

You will probably have questions along the way, and this forum can go a good resource for those questions, but your questions will need to be much more specific.
