Sound Issues

Please help.
I would like to install sound on my 12.04 server installation so I can install MPD and send audio to my stereo via my mobile telephone.
It's my understanding that because I've installed the server edition, sound capability is not standard. I've tried several suggestions on various forums but I still can't hear audio. I've VNC'd into my virtual desktop and under the sound settings there isn't any hardware options listed, even though I have both an on board and PCI sound cards. The setup is also outputting to a "dummy output"
Can someone please offer their time and suggestions?
