KVM Ripping CD's

I cannot get a KVM virtual machine to access an audio CD for ripping. I have googled the web and searched this forum, but have not found the answer. I want to try a few ripping applications before I install something permanently [my 1st attempt is vortexbox]. My sense is that since it is an audio cd, there isn't any "mounting" involved.
Are you able to ripped a cd through a KVM virtual machine?
