Hello everyone. Thank you for having this forum available to us complete noobs out here.

This is how much of a noob I am, I installed my first Linux setup today with your awesome Media server tut. Everything went without a hitch until I reached the Tight VNC install part.
I have a Windows 7 x64 ultimate os that I'm trying to see my new media server 10.04.4 on. I just keep getting the
Error Message

Failed Server.jpg (17.78 KiB) Viewed 1477 times

So I went through this entire forum and found that others have had my problem but their solutions didnt work for me. I would certainly appreciate alittle help on this noobish problem. :-(
oh yea I saw you ask for the .vnc/xstartup file. Here is mine:

Hi there and welcome to the forums

The error message to me looks like TightVNC can't even see your server. I wonder whether this is a firewall problem? Have you tried, as a test, disabling the firewall and any antivirus software on your desktop?

I would say try using the server's IP address in TightVNC to see whether that makes a difference but the fact that you can get on the server using Putty tells me that's not the issue.

Ian.

Thanks for the reply Ian!

Yes I have tried it with both Windows Firewall and Microsoft Security Essentials disabled to no avail.
And with trying the Ip of the server in VNC I get this error:

Any other Ideas I can try?

Hi,

Are you sure you're putting the desktop number after the servername/ip address in the tightvnc connection dialog box? For example: 192.168.1.126:1

Thank you so much Ian!!!!!! I didn't think about the desktop number being relevant when inputting the ip address. But It certainly was!!!! It popped right up with that minor oversight! Thanks again Ian!!!
