A couple of strange problems

Hi all,

Firstly, thanks for the guide. I have been hovering here for a couple of months and i finally decided to build my own server.

I have followed the guide and installed & reinstalled (3rd time now) and i keep having the same issues. When i log on to my virtual desktop (GNOME v2.32.1), i dont have an option add/remove but I can access the Synaptic Package Manager (Same thing?). I dont think that this in itself causes major issues as i tend to work mostly on the CLI. Under accessories, i only have Byobu Terminal, Help, Termial and Text Editor.

The 2nd problem is, for some reason, If i open a web browser or synaptic manager etc and i hit the "d" key, the program jumps to the taskbar! I have to keep the d in caps to avoid this happening. Perhaps this is a keyboard issue?? This was driving me nuts when i was trying to install TED.

The final issue i am having is TED related. As i mentioned, i dont have add/remove feature, so i go in through Synaptic Package Manager and try follow the guide:
"Click the Internet option on the left and then scroll down the list on the right until you reach OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime and place a check against it. You'll be asked if you also want to install OpenJDK Java 6 Web Start so answer install all."
I cant find OpenJDK Java 6 Runtime to place a chack against it, so im kinda stuck at this point.
EDIT: Scratch the last one. I found it!

Any help is really appreciated.

P.S. I am a Windows guru but a Linux newbie & have limited exp with Ubuntu 10/11.

Hi N1z

I've had a couple of these issues too, are you using 11.04 by any chance? For some reason someone thought that having a short cut on the d key to minimise the window was a good idea. You need to remap it from the System>Preferences>Keyboard short cuts. I also had issues with the package manager and it refusing to accept my sudo password.

In the end I reinstalled using 10.04-LTS and have found that it behaves as you'd expect every time.

Hi N1z,

I think DunkB has nailed the issue. I had the same issue(s) so went back to 10.04LTS support too. I reported the "letter d bug" back in October last year and it looks like it has still not been fixed. Perhaps it's intended behaviour and so will never be fixed? I do not know. Certainly it makes it impossible to do anything useful in a Terminal session since as soon as you try and type "sudo ....blah de blah" the window is minimised when you hit the letter d and so you can't issue any sudo commands.

Once I'd worked round the letter d issue I then hit another issue whereby it does not accept your admin password. Whether that is still an issue or not I do not know.

Anyway, installing 10.04LTS is a better idea than installing one of the later versions since 10.04 will be supported long after the later versions are.

Let us know what you decide and how you get on.

Ian.

Thanks guys,

I have put a fair bit of time into building the system and i would hate to start from scratch and I am indeed using Server 11-04. I am making the assumption that like an M$ OS, you cant simply roll back?
I just figured out the shortcut issue a minute before i logged on here :)

Thanks again for your help!

Hi N1z,

No you can't just roll back I'm afraid.

Once you've rebuilt your server as many times as I have you'll think nothing of scrapping it and starting over. I can go from nothing to having a fully configured server in around 30 minutes! Sad but true

This is a pretty steep learning curve....

Hi N1z,

Not sure how you go about building your own server again from scratch but I just work through each of the pages on my website copying and pasting the relevant commands into a putty session. I hardly do any typing at all

Oh dear. Try and stick with it N1z, don't let Bill win!

What message comes back when you try and install it. I assume you're issuing:

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get install gnome-core

Have you done a sudo apt-get update beforehand?
