Server freeze after installing gnome-core

Hi
This happens to me in early in the install. I install Ubuntu server 64bit 12.4.3 LTS
Server rebooted and I log in on the server
Then I do the following (In exactly this order)
sudo apt-get update
sudo aptitude safe-upgrade
sudo reboot -h now
Log in on the server after reboot with now issues at all
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gnome-core
sudo reboot -h now
The server will come back on after that. It freeze on a black screen and I cannot ping the server over the network. I have to hold the power button down on the PC to get it to turn off.
So the last thing I see on the screen before it blacks out is something like this
Stopping system V runlevel compatibility
the some funny icon appears on the right hand side of the screen .. look like a small clock in a hash tag . ( lol sounds funny, but i'm sure you know what i'm talking about)
So I assume it does not like the gnome core. Any solution to this or a different command I can use ?
Thanks
