XBMC is a beautiful thing! It was originally built for linux, but is available for windows as well. I think it's in the main repositories for ubuntu as well, though I don't find myself using ubuntu anymore.
Hope that helps.

Re: Tuner card / Cablecard?
I'm not sure how it works with Linux, since the last time I bothered with TV from anything but the internet was before I made the OS switch, but when I was setting a similar set up on Win7, This was what I needed: 1. A set-top box from the provider : usually when the require the box it's because the...

I opened my deluge queue and there were 30 shows queued. but if anyone was wondering these are the feeds I started using as backups: EZRSS: rss: http://www.ezrss.it/feed/ priority: 1 preset: tv Karmorra: rss: http://showrss.karmorra.info/rss.php?user_id=xxxxxx&am...

FlexGet RSS Feeds
Out of Curiousity, what site is everyone using now that EZRSS seems to have been down for the last week or two? I've been using karmorra (showRSS)but I'm not very happy with it, since it seems to be passing along some broken links, and doesn't pass any links for some of my shows that I know have air...

Re: Multiple Questions
My favorite program for renaming files I've already downloaded is FileBot. It lets you rename files based on info from thetvdb. TVRage, AniDB, IMDB, or a couple other databases. It will let you define exactly how you want to organize the information in the filename as well.

Re: Multiple Questions
Hey, Ian hit all the points I could think of too. Just a couple things to add: 1. XBMC can be installed on top of another OS, or you can use their LiveCD version (doesn't have to be run from CD, you can put it on the harddrive) which is a custom linux distro built on Ubuntu. If you go that way, you ...

Re: Backup software recomendations
Hey! Welcome to the Forums! There's a couple ways to go about the whole back-up thing. I personally store all the really important files on the server anyway, so that I can access them from any computer, so between RAID and a separate USB Backup, they're fairly redundantly safe, barring a fire, or s...

Re: VPN - VNC
Hey, so I did mess with it the other day, the set-up actually was pretty easy just following the guide on the ubuntu help pages. I didn't get a chance to try to vpn in from a separate network, but the certificate process was actually pretty simple. It's just a matter of issuing the right command and...

Re: Hardware / streaming question
I'd agree with Ian. When I started building my server I had the same intention, using it as an always-on box that would server media to everything in the house, and in addition run an htpc on top to serve my computer. Here is the issues I ran into: a. it was going to cause a lot of unneccessary ener...
